La Ferme de Rue Montréal: on the green roof of the IGA

La Ferme de Rue Montréal: sur le toit vert du IGA

The urban oasis of IGA extra Famille Duchemin , the largest rooftop vegetable garden in Canada, is enthusiastically kicking off its eighth season in Montreal's Saint-Laurent borough. And this year, it's even better: the vegetable garden is partnering with La Ferme de Rue Montréal, a non-profit organization specializing in urban agriculture. That's great news!

This partnership is a great example for promoting sustainable and local agriculture!

Although La Ferme de Rue Montréal doesn't have direct funding for this project, this collaboration allows it to implement its mission in an innovative way. The rooftop team, made up of intern students and young people who have already worked at the main farm, is responsible for producing, preparing, and packaging the vegetables. This year is a learning experience to master the specific characteristics of the rooftop, with necessary adjustments to manage heat, wind, and insects.

Although the roof was designed to be a green space, some vegetable varieties adapt better than others to the particular conditions of this place.

The IGA rooftop stands out for its ultra-local delivery: just 44 steps from the supermarket shelves!

This proximity ensures unparalleled product freshness, perfectly aligned with growing consumer demand for local foods. By using pesticide-free growing methods and optimizing irrigation with city and potentially recycled water, La Ferme de Rue Montréal demonstrates its environmental values while addressing technical challenges.

The green roof has a significant environmental impact. It helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by avoiding the need to transport vegetables and plays a key role in rainwater management, reducing excess water and strengthening Montreal's urban resilience. Thanks to its irrigation system and sustainable practices, the roof acts like a sponge, protecting municipal infrastructure while adding welcome greenery.

The partnership with Sobeys and the Duchemin family is not limited to vegetable production!

La Ferme de Rue Montréal and its partners have created a unique project that has a positive impact on the environment and the community. By implementing innovative practices and working closely with its partners, La Ferme de Rue Montréal continues to lead the way toward sustainable urban agriculture and the emergence of the next generation of farmers.

Pick up your tray of fresh vegetables today, it's worth the trip!
